Our Mission

Our students gain theoretical and methodological knowledge and skills from state-of-the-art level scientific debate, which prepare them for leadership positions and sophisticated scientific work on economic questions in the agri-food-sector.

We encourage holistic thinking along the whole value chain, from farmer to consumer and from local to global scale to prepare our graduates for a successful start into their professional career. Our study program reflects the diversity of potential employers in agribusiness, the food industry, NGOs, public authorities as well as public and private research institutes. It supports a strong personal development.

Our master program offers a balance between professional qualification and research-orientation and builds on high didactical standards in teaching. We provide the opportunity and encourage students to actively take part in research projects of the institute.

Personality Development

Adequate teaching formats encourage the development of problem-solving competence and skills needed for individual and team-oriented positions in management and research. Students further develop related expertise by exam formats such as presentations, individual seminar papers and papers from group work.

We support individual profiling, not least by offering master and minor orientations, and foster the development of professional maturity throughout the study program in order to guarantee purposeful, efficient and successful graduation. Our graduates have proven to be professionally competent and willing to take responsibility both in society and their professional life as future executives and managers.

The Institute for Food and Resource Economics (ILR) is responsible for the content and organization of the AFECO master program with most of the courses being instructed by staff members of the institute to set up a well-designed and highly integrated course program. Guest lecturers from the private and public sector bring in their expertise to support professional orientation.

ILR as an internationally cooperating institute offers a strong profile in mathematical modelling, policy advice and food chain management. Our well-developed network of renowned agri-economic research institutes at national and global level not only fosters a high-level, research oriented program with an excellent visibility, but also directly benefits our students by offering PhD positions following the master in international research projects.
The international orientation is also reflected in our two double-degree programs seamlessly integrated in the AFECO program.
